Q1. Why can’t I get my Sprint S620 card to work in my PCD-X/U132-E or PCD-X/U132-E?
A1. The Sprint network requires each card to be configured before it can connect to the network. Normally the Connection Manager software automatically carries out this configuration process, but because the Connection Manager software does not recognise the card in the U132 it cannot be done in this way.
This means that a brand new S620 card will not be able connect to the Sprint network via the U132. In some cases, the whole system will crash waiting for the card to make a connection to the network. To use the S620 card in your U132, you must first either configure it yourself (using the Connection Manager software in another machine) or ask your Sprint dealer to do it for you. If you've been previously using your card in another computer it will already be configured and you don't have to worry about this step.
Q2. Can I use the integrated Wireless LAN in my card with the U132/U142?
A2. Unfortunately it is not possible to route WLAN signals via the USB adapter. If your datacard has built in Wireless LAN (802.11g) then you will still be able to use the 3G connection via a U132 but the WLAN is not supported.
Q3. Do you have drivers for LINUX or MAC O/S?
A3. Quatech does not offer MAC or Linux support for the U132 or U142, but the original manufacturer does provide MAC support information. This information can be found at the following link:
http://www.elandigitalsystems.com/support/ufaq/u132mac.php
Linux support can be found at:
http://www.elandigitalsystems.com/support/ufaq/u132linux.php
Q4. Can I use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) with the U132/U142?
Yes, as long as you are able to setup the VPN this works very well. For the purposes of running a VPN, the U132 + your datacard will give you an internet connection which is equivalent to using a wired modem. The physical method of connecting does not affect the VPN.
You will need to setup a manual connection via your datacard, and then run a VPU over this connection.
Q5. Do I have to buy my card from an Operator?
A5. You can use any of the supported cards in the U132 regardless of where you have purchased it from. Some companies sell 'unbadged' cards and these will work. However, in order to make a connection you will need to purchase a subscription from an operator, who will supply you with a SIM card. Subscriptions are generally available either on a monthly contract (including a set number of megabytes of data) or on a 'pre-pay' arrangement. These arrangements vary from country to country.
Note that you cannot take the SIM card out of a mobile phone handset and put it into a datacard.
Q6. Do I need to plug in a power adapter?
A6. No, you will not need an additional power adapter, as sufficient power is supplied via the USB slot to power the U132 and the PCMCIA card. However, if your laptop or desktop USB port does not supply as much power as the USB specification says it should, then you may encounter problems and need an external power supply.
The symptoms of insufficient power are typically the U132 randonly appearing and dissapearing from Device Manager, and accompanying beeps. If a power supply is required, the specification for the supply is 6Vdc, 1A. The absolute maximum input voltage to be applied to the dc jack input is 7.5Vdc.
Suitable power adapters for the U132 :
- Farnell 488-800 (Variable)
- RS 423-9224 (Variable)
- RS 431-7302 (Variable)
- 3-12VDC/1000mA Regulated AC-to-DC Adapter, Model 273-1680 from Radioshack. (Because this is a variable power supply, it is also suitable for use with the U111-530/630.)
- 3-12VDC/800mA Regulated AC-to-DC Adapter, Model 273-1667 from Radioshack
- Model DMS0601050-PC-IC from Digikey. The P7 is the suitable connector for use with the U132
Please check that you purchase an adapter suitable for your local electricity supply!
Q7. Can I use other PCMCIA cards in my U132/U142?
A7. No. There is no 'universal' solution which will support all PCMCIA cards in a USB adapter ( similar to the P-Series of PCI adapters.) The U132 supports only the Wireless Modem cards which have been designed using a USB host controller chip as a bridge. It does not support memory cards.
Q8. Which cards are supported by the U132/U142?
A8. The U132 supports most 32-bit (CardBus) wireless modem cards. Please see our U132 supported card list or U142 supported card list for more information.
Other PCMCIA cards, including memory cards, are not supported.
Q9. Which Option Wireless cards are support in the U132?
A9.
*These are the first two letters of the serial number of the card.
Q10. How do I get my Verizon PC5740 to work with the PCD-X/U132-E or PCD-X/U142-E?
A10. Click here for U132/U142 Manual
Q11. My Verizon PC5740 is not loading my web pages properly or is continually disconnecting what can I do?
A11.
- REMOVE the PC5740 from the U132, then,
- DISCONNECT the U132 prior to copying the file to your hard disk drive.
- Download the latest elu132.sys file and unzip it in a temporary directory.
- Copy the elu132.sys file into the "c:\windows\system32\drivers" sub-folder.
- Reconnect the U132.
- Reinsert the PC5740 into the U132.
If your PC has a wireless local area network (WLAN) device installed, disable it prior to clicking on the manually created Verizon Dial-up Connection icon. If any connection problem still occurs, disable any firewall running on your PC (especially McAffee or Norton Internet Security).
Q12. How can I query the modem to see if I have everything setup correctly?
A12. Go to device manager. Expand your modems, double click on your wirless card. Right click on your modem card and select properties and then click on diagnostics.

Q13. What if I do not know the information to use for the manual connection?
A13. You may need to contact your ISP provider. Below is a list of known provider manual connection information.
