Q1. What does it mean to have an unregistered  Windows XP/Vista  driver? Why do I get a warning screen when I install the drivers for the USBN-500?

A. Microsoft has implemented a driver signing program. This program verifies that a driver will not cause a problem on a system. Although the driver signing is not a complete indication that a driver is safe or bug-free, it’s certainly reasonable to assume that signed drivers are generally safer for the overall system health than unsigned driver.

However, just because a driver is unsigned DOES NOT mean that it will no function properly in your system. An “unregistered” driver is one that has not been officially tested and certified by Microsoft. Unlike previous versions of Windows, Windows XP/Vista warns users every time they try to install a driver that Microsoft has not certified. Quatech thoroughly tests all drivers before releasing them to our customers. The Microsoft XP/Vista warning has nothing to do with the quality of our driver or it’s ability to function properly in your system.

When you see this warning during the installation of the USBN-500, simply tell Windows that you want to install the driver anyway, and continue with standard installation process.

Q2. How do I disable the Windows XP Driver Signing check?

A. To disable Windows XP/Vista signing warnings, follow the steps below:

Windows XP

  1. Double click on the System icon in Control Panel.
  2. Left click on the Hardware tab.
  3. Left click on the Driver Signing button. (click here for a screen cap of the Driver Signing Options Window
  4. Choose the Ignore option. Click on O.K. and then Apply and O.K.
  5. Windows will not warn anymore about driver signing.

Windows Vista
Warning: This may allow Vista to install a driver that will make your system unstable. Frequently, disabling this check still will not get the driver installed.
That being said, if you are desperate to get a driver installed, this is certainly worth a shot.
1. Create a shortcut on the desktop to cmd.exe

2. Right-click on the shortcut and select Run as administrator
3. When the command window opens, type or paste the following and press ENTER:
       Bcdedit.exe /set nointegritychecks ON
4. Reboot and then try installing the driver.

Q3. I am unable to see my USBN-500 in the device mapping screen.

A. Please be aware that the default address for the USBN-500 is 192.168.3.22. If your pc is not on the same subnet 192.168.3.XXX (XXX being a number between 1-255 with the exeption of 22 already being used by the server) your unit will not appear in the device mapping screen.
Note* Please be sure your firewall is disabled for proper enumeration.

Q4. I changed my IP address of my USBN-500 and now my found new hardware wizard appears again. Do I have an issue with my installation?

A. The Utility treats each IP address as a unique device. When a new address appears in the utility it will prompt the found new hardware wizard to appear.

Q5. What do the LED’s on my USBN-500 indicate?

A. The power LED will be always on when powered on.

There are 2 LEDs on top of the RJ-45 plug as top right and top left when facing this RJ-45 plug.

The top right LED will be always on if network connection is good, and flashes couple of times every several minutes to detect if network connection is still good.

The top left LED will be always on also when powered on.  It will become flashing while data is in transmission, and will also flash couple of times every several minutes because any installed client software "USBIP Admin" will detect the usb server and see if it is still connected.
