Synchronous Serial PCMCIA Cards

Quatech's single port RS-232 synchronous serial PCMCIA cards support asynchronous data formats as well as byte-oriented synchronous protocols such as BiSync, and bit-oriented synchronous protocols such as HDLC and SDLC. The card's robust design provides 1024-byte transmit and receive FIFOs, and a SCC with advanced internal functions including on-chip baud rate generators and digital phase-lock loop (DPLL) for recovering data clocking from received data streams.

Quatech' s synchronous serial products are among the most robust on the market, providing deep data FIFOs for interrupt driven communication enabling data to be moved to and from the SCC in large blocks resulting in data speeds up to 600 kbps (RS-232). The cards' SCC also provides a programmable baud rate generator and digital phase-lock loop (DPLL) for recovering data clocking from received data streams.

SyncDrive (Plus) is a frame-level synchronous communication driver implemented by a DLL and a device driver. Applications interface to SyncDrive (Plus) through C callable routines and C data structures. The routines provide services for channel configuration, transmitting a buffer, receiving a buffer, setting and monitoring I/O status. Once a handle is opened to the device driver, the application simply reads and writes frames as it would files, without worrying about buffer management, interrupts, or register handling. SyncDrive (Plus) handles start and end flags, synchronization characters, and CRC information on transmit and receive. The C data structures used are for configuration, transmitting and receiving buffers.

Quatech's MPAP-200/300 RS-422/485 synchronous serial PCMCIA card is currently being used to interface with the flight recorders found in a wide variety of military and commercial aircraft. The flight recorder, commonly known as the "little black box" responsible for recording what went wrong during a tragic flight, is also responsible for recording maintenance, structural, and engine data. Maintenance personnel at the aircraft base download this data directly after each flight. Immediate maintenance can then be performed on the aircraft, reducing downtime and saving money for the aircraft fleets.

A typical system is pictured at left. The recorder stores flight information and voice data in solid state memory. An operator, using a portable PC containing a custom version of Quatech's card, uploads and downloads data to the recording system. The high speed synchronous RS-422 interface (up to 4 Mbps!) allows data to be downloaded in minutes. The PCMCIA card is connected to the recorder with a serial interface cable. This portable arrangement is advantageous because the same system can be shared among an entire fleet.
