Additional Applications for USB to USB to RS-232/422/485 Serial Adapters

Application: Home Automation
Quatech Products Used: QSU2-100 USB to RS-232 serial adapter and QSU2-400 four port USB to RS-232/422/485 serial adapter.

One Quatech customer is using our USB to serial adapters to implement a home automation project. The RS-485 ports on the QSU2-400 are being used to connect with the home's HVAC system. The RS-232 ports connect to other household devices including lights, phone, audio and security systems. The Windows XP remote desktop is being used to access the serial ports for remote control of the numerous serial devices.

Application: Water Current Measurements
Quatech Products Used: QSU2-100 four port USB to RS-232 serial adapter

The world's leading innovator and manufacturer of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs™) and Doppler Velocity Logs uses Quatech USB to serial adapters to implement and test their systems.

Their high-tech sonar instruments measure the speed of water motion in oceans, rivers, and lakes. These devices often communicate with a host computer via an RS-232 serial connection. Our customer also develops software to control these instruments, and collect, process, and display data from them. Data from other serial devices, such as GPS, heading sensors, etc., are often incorporated into the system as well. This customer chose Quatech's USB to serial adapters because they have found that "some computers, especially laptops, have very poor performance with RS-232 serial communications. "
