PCMCIA-based wireless modems are standard issue for many laptops, as they enable business people on the go to have a readily accessible Internet connection, even if they are not able to connect to an actual phone line. Many of these business people also have desktop computers that they use when they are in the office. Instead of purchasing a phone line dedicated to the Internet and installing a modem on the desktop, purchasing a PCMCIA card drive enables them to take advantage the same wireless modem used with the laptop.
