A miniature force probe is implanted in the patient, and data from that probe is transmitted via a RS-232 serial connection. The operating room laptop lacked a built-in serial port, and Quatech's SSP-100 was purchased to provide that vital serial link.

A major manufacturer of leading edge imaging technology uses Quatech SSP-100 serial PCMCIA cards to keep their medical imaging devices connected to today's laptops. Their application specialist has found that many of the service personnel are being issued laptops without standard serial ports. His solution is to provide them with an SSP-100 so that they can interface with the equipment. He has found that other manufacturer's USB to serial adapters caused conflicts with the devices software, and opted for Quatech's SSP-100 PCMCIA based solution.
