Industrial Control Applications--RS-232 Serial PCMCIA Cards
Application:
FLASH Memory
Programming
Quatech
Products Used: SSP-100
single port RS-232 serial PCMCIA card
Field technicians often need to access the FLASH memory of stand-alone
devices via a standard serial port. Many laptops no longer ship with a serial
port, and Quatech's SSP-100 provides a simple port-expansion solution.
One Quatech customer purchased our SSP-100 cards to solve just this problem
for their team of technicians servicing weighing devices such as scales
and indicators. This customer was pleased with the Quatech solution, and
told us that "more and more laptops are being produced without serial
ports, and to buy a laptop with a serial port, as well as a hard drive,
floppy drive, and CD-ROM drive, is becoming prohibitively expensive. With
your product, we can, hopefully, eliminate the need for a laptop to have
an internal serial port, and can reduce our laptop costs and open our
laptop vendor options. "
Application:
Spallation
Neutron Source Project
Quatech Products Used: DSP-100
two port RS-232 serial PCMCIA card
The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is an accelerator-based
neutron source being built in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, by the U.S. Department
of Energy. The SNS will provide the most intense pulsed neutron beams
in the world for scientific research and industrial development. (For
more information see www.sns.gov)
One of the engineers on the project is using Quatech's DSP-100 on a laptop computer
to communicate with various vacuum related equipment during construction and
installation. The vacuum equipment will include mass spectrometer leak detectors,
magnetic sector residual gas analyzers and quadrapole residual gas analyzers.
The data is being processed using a custom application software package and
LabView as the data acquisition control system.
