Energy curtailment programs are used by utility companies to manage power consumption during peak usage periods. Large businesses are typically given financial incentives to participate in these programs. The system works by connecting the Energy Management Panel that controls power usage at the consumer site to a Demand Curtailment Server. When load management is required, the Utility's Master Server send the request to the the Demand Curtailment Server, which in-turn executes the commands to reduce power supplied to the participating businesses.

Traditional systems use a dial-up phone connection to connect the Energy Management Panel to the Curtailment Server. This mode of communication is not only expensive to implement, it is slow, and may become disabled if a power emergency coincides with telephone line problems.

Device Servers are a cost-effective, reliable way to significantly improve performance of energy curtailment systems. As shown in the system diagram, by network-enabling the Energy Management Panel it can be remotely monitored and controlled by the Curtailment Server--just as if it were directly attached to that server's local COM port. With an always-on Ethernet connection, communication is near instantaneous, and power usage can be controlled in real-time. This results in more efficient load management that will contribute to improved prevention measures that protect against catastrophic power outages.
