Retail Applications RS-232 Serial CompactFlash Cards

Application: Inventory monitoring and reporting
Quatech Products Used: SSCF-100 single port RS-232 serial CompactFlash card and DSCF-100 two port serial CompactFlash card.

Handheld computers are becoming increasingly more popular for inventory control systems. However, these small devices often do not come with a port to which a barcode reader can be attached. Using Quatech's serial CF cards solves the problem easily, and enables any serial-based bar code reader to be attached to PDA and other handheld computers runing Windows, Windows CE or Pocket PC. A simple portable barcode setup is shown below.
Simply being able to go to a shelf and read a UPC symbol is helpful in and of itself. But, using Quatech two port serial CF cards can improve the system further. For example, in the diagram to the left a serial printer is added to the handheld setup. This allows inventory statistics to be printed at the same time they are being recorded, rather than having to wait to download the results to a PC at a later time.
Another 2 port appliation is shown at right. Here a bar code reader and a gps receiver are both attached to the PDA. Using this system a single operator can scan any number ot items and have their exact position recorded and transmitted to a home office.
